As much as I like the contemporary version of Red Sonja, I wanted to do the original Robert Howard version from the Shadow of the Vulture - Red Sonya of Rogatino.

I have not read much of the original Conan but I have read shadow of the Vulture, The Sword Woman, Hawks over Egypt, and several other of his shorter stories. It seems hard to find modern writers of E. Howard's caliber.

As much as I like the current Red Sonja images, I wish more people knew of and/or appreciated the original idea. Luckily for me, Howard gave us a good description in Shadow of the Vulture.

She kicked ass. I found the original story (Shadow of the vulture)at Project Gutenberg of Australia. Funny, she looks a lot like my girlfriend (a fencer) who posed for the image.

I just started reading the Conan stories and I fell in LOVE with Howard's writing style, setting and with Conan as a tremendous humanist fantasy hero. He really is an inspiring figure.

What I noticed most in the original stories was Conan's level of sophistication compared to the movies, which make him out to be more simple minded. Howard's writing is way better than the typical pulp writer.

I think they were kinda limited with what they could do with Conan in the movie due to Ahnold's lack of English mastery. But even the way Conan acts has a ring of civilization to it. The greatest example I've hit so far is in The Phoenix on the Sword, where he really, DESPERATELY wants to spare Rinaldo the bard, because he recognizes what a cultural resource he is.

And you're absolutely right about the quality of his writing. Lovecraft is a close second, but he drones about "the horror" towards the end of the story. Howard's able to circumvent that by having Conan kill the horror! ;P

Both Conan and Howard are pretty complex characters. I read all of the stories in a row, presumably in the order in which they were written (publishers seem to disagree on this). My favorite is the only full Conan novel - Hour of the Dragon, based loosely on The Scarlet Citadel. Some complex storytelling going on there.

I can't wait to get to that one. I loved the Scarlet Citadel.
